Abstract

The awareness to good looking and healthy has been increasing in public, especially in dental health. This can be seen by many women who use braces to align their teeth nowadays. This awareness is associated with the increased of their economy and knowledge of the importance of dental health. One of the appliances to align the teeth are fixed orthodontic appliance that is firmly attached to the tooth surface. The patients using the appliances must have the high hygiene awareness to clean the tooth surface because the leftover food will be very difficult to be cleaned due to the presence of their brackets, bands and braces. Because of the presence of bacteria in the oral cavity and the remaining of the food which could be sticky and if they are not brushed correctly, they will attach and facilitate the accumulation of bacteria. This will result in dental caries, gingivitis, calculus, and the friction of appliances can also cause ulcers. Therefore, it is necessary for the patient to use additional tools other than ordinary toothbrushes, for example orthodontic tooth brush and also mouthwash. These tools are useful for maintaining healthy teeth so that the tooth surface and the oral mucosa keep healthy. Efforts are made regularly to prevent sticky and rough foods so that the appliances can still be functioning well. Patients should also avoid colored beverages or soft drinks so that the rubber and elastic will not easily change color. If patients are going to exercise, they should use special protective equipment for their protection to avoid the unnecessary trauma. In addition, patients have to control regularly to their dentist for braces activation to achieve optimal results of the treatment.
